Brief Choice and SWOT Analysis

We have chosen to make a music video this year because we are looking to be more creative and improve different skills from those we developed last year. The brief is:

'A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the three options:
- a website for the band
  - a digipak for the album's release
   - a magazine advertisement for the digipak.'

Of the three optional tasks, the two we have chosen to do is creating a digipak and then an advertisement for it. We have chosen to do this brief because we think that making a music video will allow us to use a wider variation of techniques than another film. Also, as we chose to make an opening sequence last year, we think that it will be more of a challenge to create a music video as we get to research and discover new codes, conventions and theories that aren't applicable to film. The reason we want to do a digipak is because we have virtually no experience in this area and we would like to improve our skill level in this area of print media. It also means I can apply some knowledge that I gained from my GCSE media and build upon this foundation.

SWOT Analysis

STRENGTHS: I am confident in my editing abilities and my use of Final Cut Pro X. I think I can use this software effectively to create a believable music video. I also own Final Cut Pro X at home, which has allowed me to develop my skills further over the summer.

WEAKNESSES: A weakness that I have is a lack of access to good equipment. Last year, we filmed on an iPhone, and while the quality was acceptable I think it could have been much better had we used a real camera and possibly even a microphone for better audio quality.

OPPORTUNITIES: Some opportunities that I can take advantage of are the school's resources (like tripods and the Macbook computers in school to complete the most professional-looking final product.

THREATS: Some conditions that may negatively impact my progress are the limitations of having no budget, and perhaps elemts outside of my control (such as weather or lighting if we choose to film outside or in winter).
