Music Video Goodwin/Todorov Analysis
The way that the music video cuts between shots in time with the beat of the song shows how it conforms to Goodwin's theory and that there is a relationship between the music and the visuals.
An important shot is The one pictured below-- a wideshot of Halsey lying on her bed in her underwear looking at the pictures she has taken. This again conforms to Goodwin's Theory as it shows a woman in a private moment that we normally wouldn't get to see, also known as voyeurism.
In addition, there are other moments where this music video conforms to Goodwin's theory. As pictured below, there are several moments where there is a close up or extreme close up of Halsey's face, which according to Goodwin is used to promote brand image.
There is also obviously a clear relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as is stated by Goodwin's theory. The lyrics of the song's chorus are 'everything is blue' which is mirrored in the clever colour palette present throughout the entire music video of only including blue and white. This use of a colour scheme also conforms to another part of Goodwin's theory as he states that music videos contain conventions of the genre, and indie music videos often feature a colour scheme in them.
The next lyrics 'everything is grey, his hair, his smoke his dreams' are shown in the idea that she likes an older man. The older man she likes has greying hair, smokes cigarettes, etc.
The music video is obviously set in the past, as the main character uses a polaroid camera and the setting, clothing and makeup is more suited to an era of the past like the 50s or 60s than the present day. This is another convention of indie music videos, and another example of how this music video conforms to Goodwin's theory.
