Editing Session Five

In this session, after listening to our audience feedback as well as the feedback from our teacher, we decided that our video needed more interest in terms of editing. Therefore I came up with the idea of adding 'light leaks' as an overlay to add interest to the live performance, and we also googled some new editing techniques and then taught ourselves how to create a 'freeze frame' effect.

Firstly, I went onto YouTube and downloaded some light leak overlays -- both a red one and a blue one -- we planned on using both and changing them halfway through so that the colours represent the singer's passion and love at the start which then changes to her sadness at the break up at the end. I then put these videos into Final Cut Pro X and layered them over the live performance, turning the opacity down so that the video was visible underneath. At first, this looked unprofessional because the light leak also went into the next shot and then abruptly cut off, but I fixed this by zooming in and using the blade tool to cut the light leak precisely when the shot changed.

Then we started to do a 'freeze frame' technique. Firstly, I chose a shot where the camera was completely still but that there was still movement in. At first, we chose to do it on a shot that panned to the left, but this stopped the effect from working. Then, I got the blade tool and cut the shot where I wanted the first freeze frame to be. After that, I added a freeze frame and dragged it up so that it was above the narrative, and then turned the opacity down slightly. I did this several more times so that it created a 'shadow' as the character moved across the screen.

Furthermore, because of our audience feedback about the bass in the audio, I reduced the bass in the settings on the left of the screen and also turned the overall volume of the music down to try and remedy this.

Finally, a lot of our audience feedback said that they didn't like the shots at the beginning with the read thread. Therefore, we decided to refilm some of those shots (specifically the one where the girl touches her hair and the string is visible on her finger). We changed it because the shot-type was quite strange as we had cut her head in half.
