Practice Video 2

Over the Christmas break, I decided to make another practice video to focus on my editing skills.

In this video, I chose the song 고양이 (Cat) by Sunwoo Jung-Ah featuring IU because I had already recorded a cover, and took ideas from the original video and my own interpretation of the song.

I took inspiration from the lyrics, which I roughly translated below:
this song is called Cat (ko-yang-i / 고양이)

Think again
This will not be our best choice
Why are you hiding your feelings (heart?)
Now look at me, your eyes are so easily caught (?)

Come closer
 no, warmly, like this
to move you with the small sound of my heart (soft heartbeat?)
Let's be together more

Before you came to me
I was lonely
no
I was bored
You're already late
You'll regret it
The moment you turn your back on me (?)

You will miss me
You will miss me
once you fall for me there's no way out
I can't help it, it's my nature

Come closer,
I will cast a spell over your desolate day
I don't know why
But everyone goes crazy for it (?)

If you go away, it's alright
There are so many people who like me
I have nothing to be sad about
It's only your loss
From the moment you turn your back on me

You'll miss me
You'll miss me
Once our eyes meet, it's game over
I can't help it, it's in my nature

You'll miss me
You'll miss me
You'll miss me
You'll miss me
Once you fall for me there's no way out
(no way out)
I can't help it, it's my nature
(Right right/right right)
Think again
Think again

The idea that I got from the lyrics was that of a holiday, maybe falling in love with a tourist and then them leaving, so I decided that I would collect old footage of Paris and Parisian holidays, fashion and adverts to include in my footage. I also included some 8mm footage that I had on my computer already of two cats, and put it throughout the song (especially when the lyrics are 'I can't help it, it's my nature' [1:11] [2:17] [2:58] at the end of each chorus.)
My main focus of this video was the convention of having cuts in time with the music. I tried especially hard with this because it is something that I would like to include in our final product, so the introduction and minutes [2:21-2:38]) I also wanted to include several match-on-action cuts so that I would be lip-syncing the same words but in a different outfit to connote the passage of time and the changing of personality that fits with my interpretation of the lyrics.

I also made small cuts to imitate the footage from Super8 cameras, I noticed that there are short jumpcuts between actions [an example of this happening naturally in some of the old footage I used is at [2:45], and then my imitations of it happen at [0:46] [3:06] and at several other points throughout the video.

Additionally, I focused on costume in the video to represent the song and my interpretation of the song. I chose the red choker (red connoting love) because it is reminiscent of a cat collar, one of the themes in the video, and I chose the beret and Parisian style outfits to go with the theme of Paris.

I took the idea of the black and white, 20s style camera from the second half of the video, as well as the playful body language and facial expressions. While this music video has the two main characters acting like cats, I decided to take this idea and include real footage of cats instead. The inclusion of  Alice in Wonderland projected into the background helped me to decide on the whimsical feeling of the music video that I created.

For reference, the original video by 1TheK and Sunwoo Jung-Ah is embedded below.
